When Matty Juniosa stepped onto the Britain’s Got Talent stage, he was already an experienced performer with years of hard work behind him. Originally from Mandaluyong City in the Philippines, Matty moved to Glasgow, Scotland, in 2022 to study Musical Theatre at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. With a partial scholarship helping him pursue his dream, he balanced his studies with part-time work and singing opportunities. Open-mic nights and performances around Glasgow helped him develop the confidence and stage presence that would later capture the attention of millions.
Matty’s journey had started several years earlier in the Philippines. In 2019, at age 20, he auditioned for Idol Philippines with Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” and reached the Top 12. He later formed the vocal trio iDolls with fellow contestants Lucas Garcia and Enzo Almario. His passion for musical theatre eventually led him to Scotland, where he took on roles including Lola in Kinky Boots and Clopin in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Each experience helped shape him into the versatile performer he became.
For his Britain’s Got Talent audition, Matty chose Prince’s legendary “Purple Rain.” Rather than simply copying the original, he spent weeks developing his own arrangement. His emotional vocals and theatrical performance immediately grabbed the audience’s attention. As the performance reached its biggest moments, the crowd erupted, with viewers calling for Simon Cowell to give him the Golden Buzzer. Simon ultimately did exactly that, sending Matty directly through to the semi-finals as golden confetti filled the stage.
Beyond his remarkable voice, Matty’s personality also made him memorable. His humor, confidence, and openness quickly connected with viewers. Behind the success is an even more personal ambition: helping his mother retire and building a career that allows him to perform for audiences around the world. His BGT breakthrough also coincided with another major opportunity, as he was cast as Annas in the 2026 West End production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the London Palladium.
